स्त्री संत मालिकेतील अग्रेसर मुक्ताबाई, कान्होपात्रा, जनाबाई, वेणाबाई, आक्काबाई, मीराबाई यांसह बहिणाबाईंचे स्थान मानावे लागेल.
बहिणाबाईंचा जन्म, गोदावरीच्या उत्तरेस घृष्णेश्वराच्या पश्चिमेस, वैजापूर तालुक्‍यातील देवगांव (रंगार्याचे) येथे शके १५५१ मध्‍ये ब्राम्हण कुटुंबात झाला. तिच्या आईचे नांव जानकी व पित्‍याचे नांव आऊजी. माता-पित्‍यानी तिचा विवाह वयाच्‍या पाचव्या वर्षी त्याच गावातील पाठक कुटुम्बात लावला.
संत बहिणाबाईना लहानपणापासुनच परमार्थाची व भक्तीची ओढ होती. कथा – कीतने, पुराण-श्रवण आणि सत्‍पुरूषांची सेवा यात संत बहिणाबाई रमली होती. पण तिची संसारावरील आसक्‍ती कमी होवून परमार्थीक वृत्ती वाढत गेली. घरची गरीबी,शि़क्षणाचा अभाव, तरीही समाधानी वॄत्ती व संतवृत्तीला साजेशी पाण्डुरंगाची ओढ मनात होतीच. अखंड नामस्मरण चालू असे. शेतात काम करित असतानाही हा भक्तिभाव अभंगाचे रूपाने तिच्या मुखातून बाहेर पडे.
पुढे कोल्‍हापूर वास्‍तव्‍यात जयराम स्‍वामीच्‍या कथा कीर्तनाने संत बहिणाबाईच्‍या मनावर प्रभाव पडला. ती रोज तुकोबाचे अभंग म्‍हणू लागली व तुकोबाचे दर्शनाचा ध्‍यास घेतला. तिला तुकोबारायाना सदगुरू करून त्यांचे अनुग्रह व आर्शिवाद घ्‍यावयाचा होता. म्‍हणून रात्रंदिवस तुकोबाचे अभंग म्हणत त्यांचे ध्‍यान करू लागली शेवटी कार्तिक व. ५ शके १५६९ रोजी तुकोबारायानी स्‍वप्‍नात येवून गुरूपदेश दिला. बहिणाबाईचे सारे जीवन गुरूबोधामुळे बदलून गेले. तिनें आपले गुरु संत तुकाराम महाराज व त्यांचीहि गुरुपरंपरा आपल्या अभंगांत वर्णन केली आहे.
त्यांचे वर्णन करताना गेल्या शतकातील एक श्रेष्ठ सन्त, सन्तचरित्रकार आणि 'श्री गजानन विजय'कर्ते सन्तकवी दासगणू महाराज लिहितात .. पहा केवढा अधिकार .. ऋणि तिचा परमेश्वर ... या साध्वीची समाधी 'शेऊर' या गावी आहे.
चमत्कार
असे सांगतात की त्यांना त्यांच्या पूर्वीच्या तेरा जन्मांचे स्मरण होते. या साध्वीच्या चरित्रातील एक प्रसंग ज्ञात आहे तो असा: नेमाप्रमाणे एकादशीच्या वारीकरिता पंढरीला निघालेल्या असताना त्याना अचानक थंडी वाजून ताप भरला.परंतू पाण्डुरंगाच्या भेटीची केवढी तळमळ, की त्यानी अंगावरच्या फाटक्या घोंगडीला विनंती केली, " ही माझी हुडहुडी तात्पुरती तुझ्याजवळ ठेव. एवधी वारी करून येईन आणि मग माझा भोग भोगिन." ही घोंगडी त्यानी एका झाडावर ठेवली व त्या वारीस निघून गेल्या. त्या सुखरूप परत येईपर्यन्त ते झाड हीव भरल्यामुळे थड्थड हालत होते.
संत बहिणाबाई यांनी सुमारे ४७३ अभंगांची रचना केली आहे.
